An epochal photograph: The Whirlpool Galaxy (M51) in Canes Venatici, as photographed by Jason Ware through the Meade 16" LX200 Schmidt-Cassegrain with altazimuth field tripod. This photograph is believed to be the first long exposure amateur astrophotograph ever taken with an altazimuth - mounted telescope. Mr. Ware composited two one - hour photos to obtain the result here. During this time the telescope's altazimuth field rotated 21", a rotation fully and precisely compensated for by the Meade #1222 Field De-rotate. The two one-hour color negatives, both taken at the telescope's main f/10 focus on gas - hypered Fuji Super G800 film, were sandwiched to produce the high contrast and color saturation of the final result.
