Leica Trinovid 8 x 50 BN and 10 x 50 BN Binoculars

The 1990's generations of the Leica Trinovid BA and BN lines of binoculars represented their best possible optical performance at the time coupled with an incredibly compact yet rugged body design. This was achieved by the application of state of the art computer aided optical design, and by the use of special high grade optical raw glass materials as well as the high grade structural materials, such as magnesium and aluminum alloys.

The Leica ULTRAVID 50mm series were introduced in 2003. The ULTRAVID models became an alternative to the remaining Trinovid BN and BC lines while since several of the most popular Trinovid models will also remain in production as less costly yet capable options. By 2005 it was decided the 50mm BN models will be phased out as most clients seem to prefer the ULTRAVID.

At left is illustrated the Leica 10 x 50 BN Trinovid (eyecups in retracted position); the size and other external features of the 10 x 50 are identical to the 8 x 50 BN.

The Leica Trinovid 8 x 50 BN is an all around binocular with high light transmission. It features a large exit pupil which makes the unit highly desirable for work in low light environments, and it facilitates the following of moving objects as the large exit pupil can easily remain positioned over the iris of the human eye. Furthermore, the balance, feel, and weight of the 8 x 50 BN contribute to the users ability to hold the binocular steady enough to reveal distant details clearly. The remarkably slim and compact housing assures this binocular can easily be put into brief case or travel bag, making this quite a handy binocular to travel with - having a binocular available is just as important as its optical properties. A handy professional instrument that performs exceedingly well, even in poor light conditions.

Especially in the most difficult light conditions of dawn or at dusk, the Leica Trinovid 10 x50 BN shows why it is a leader among the world's very best binoculars. The finest details remain discernible. even at dusk: the high light transmission and high magnification of the 10 x 50 BN always provide high contrast and magnificent resolving power capabilities.

Since the introduction of the BN series in January 2001, these Trinovid BN models provide even closer focus capability than the BA series. The 8x 50 BN now puts objects as close as 3.60 m / 11.7 ft. in focus. While the 10x 50 BN can reach even closer, to 3.30 m / 11 ft. thereby making it a good choice for studies of small objects (butterflies, etc.) where the extra magnification and closer focus make good sense.

As with the 8 x 50 BN the arrangement, feel, and weight of the 10 x 50 BN contribute to the users ability to comfortably balance and hand hold the binocular steady enough to reveal distant details clearly. The remarkably slim and compact housing assures this binocular can easily be put into brief case or travel bag, making this quite a handy binocular to travel with - imagine traveling the world with these! Ideal in every respect for professional applications, it is especially recommended for the observation of animals where prudence dictates a safe distance be maintained, for surveillance, for ornithology, and for astronomy.
