    Making Observing Comfortable

Advanced Observatory Control Software & Hardware

Revision: 3.0

Pier-Tech Trademark Pier-Tech, Inc. is a US based manufacturing company. The company was established for the purpose of making fixed and portable Piers that can accept astronomical German Equatorial or Fork Mounts or other instruments. In time they expanded their production to develop astronomical observatories with slide-off roof, and to complete the ensemble the developed an integrated hardware and software solution to permit either local or remote control of observatory functions named simply enough "Advanced Observatory Control Software & Hardware". So by 2008 Pier-Tech was offering almost everything that an amateur or professional astronomer could want to house their telescope or other project.

This new software and hardware package boasts many features not found in other observatory automation packages. The controller hosts stored configuration settings and a microprocessor that can automatically open or close the observatory at a specific time or signal (for example Cloud Sensor and/or SBIG Seeing Monitor) enabling unattended-automated control of your roll off roof observatory without the need of a local PC or Server. The Cloud Sensor can execute an automated routine consisting of park (move) telescope to its safe stored position, close roof or open roof, all with feedback from the roof position limit switches and the mount parked switch. If used with our height adjustable piers Pier-Tech 2 or Pier-Tech 3 for example, then you will also be able to raise or lower the pier as part of your observing session automation routine. In this scenario, the Cloud Sensor and/or seeing monitor can execute an automated routine consisting of pier down, park telescope, close roof or open roof, pier up, all with feedback from the position limit switches on the roof, pier and mount. These routines can also be activated from popular observatory control packages such as CCDAutoPilot and ACP, since it is ASCOM compatible. Optional plug-in modules that are available for use with our controller include Wi-Fi and cell tower control modules.

Advanced Observatory Control Software & Hardware Features:

  • Microprocessor-based control board.

If the equipment is relocated to another location, then the latitude setting can be changed for use at that other latitude simply by replacing the Latitude Risers.

  • Stored configuration and logic control for unattended operation of the observatory.

  • Positional feedback switches for confirmation of pier and roof locations.

  • Telescope/Mount parked position input included.

  • Includes a precision machined flat top plate to accommodate your telescope or equatorial wedge hole patterns (specify), this is included in price.

  • Manual push-button controls: Pier Up / Down, and Roof Open / Close.

  • Real-time indicators of feedback devices: Pier Lowered, Roof Open.

  • Boltwood Cloud sensor configuration. Parameters available for reaction to the cloud sensor input.

  • USB and Ethernet connectivity.

  • Observatory scheduler, program a time when to open and when to close the observatory roof.

  • >Provides the latest and greatest in software technology: ASCOM compatibility, redeveloped using Microsoft .NET Framework¨.

  • ActiveX control for easy integration into other software packages.

  • Can be incorporated into any roll off roof observatory with new installation or as a retrofit.

  • Is supported by a broad selection of proven options:

Company Seven can provide as much support as the customer prefers: consulting and sales, facility preparation (foundation work, utilties, permits), construction, systems integration, and operator training. Just tell us what type of telescope and mount you have, and we can take care of the rest.

Hardware components of the Pier-Tech AOC

Tri-Pier2 with Paramount ME at its "home" position. Raising the pier allows ME to clear the roofline

The Pier-Tech AOCS remotely opens/closes the Rollamatic skylight, raises/lowers the Pier and responds to the Boltwood Cloud Sensor. The additional circuitry in the top left and top right is to interface the AOCS to the Rollamatic system

Limit switches from AOCS. The one in the middle of the opening indicates when the roof is closed, and the one at the end when it is open.

Tri-Pier2 in fully raised position with Paramount ME
in its parked position. Bolted to wooden pedestal atop a reinforced wood floor. The legs remain to add stability and distribute weight; this seems to be helpful when the Pier is fully raised.

Tri-Pier2 supports a Paramount ME plus two imaging trains: 1. Celestron C-11 with Optec TCF-S focuser, an OAG with SBIG STL Remote Guide Head and SBIG ST-2000XM with CFW-10 filter wheel. 2. Takahashi FSQ-106EDX + FLI PDF focuser + STL-CFW8 + STL-11000M. The total weight including the mount Appx. 280 lbs.

Company Seven became convinced this product line had evolved to provide such a comprehensive solution for our customers. When one of our customers in Maryland took our advice to consider a Pier-Tech observatory and pier, the customer asked us to provide a 'turn key' solution: the telescope with mount atop a Pier-Tech 2 Pier, all within a Pier-Tech Tele-Station 2 Observatory. And so beginning in July 2008 among their best endorsements is the fact that Company Seven, one of the most accomplished remaining specialty astronomical instruments companies, saw fit to make these products available and with our services too! We invite you to contact Company Seven to learn what we and our Pier-Tech products can do to make your observing sessions more frequent and more rewarding.
